How to play
Find the hidden five-letter word in six guesses or fewer. Each guess gives you colour clues, so every word you try narrows down what the answer can be.
The basics
- 1 Type any five-letter word and press Enter. It has to be a real word, not a random string of letters.
- 2 After each guess, every tile turns green, yellow or grey to show how close that letter is.
- 3 You have six rows. Solve it and a new word is ready straight away.
Reading the colours
A round, step by step
Here is how a typical round plays out. The hidden word is PLANT.
Repeated letters
A word can contain the same letter twice. If you guess a letter twice and the answer has it only once, one tile lights up and the other stays grey. The keyboard always shows the best result you have found for each letter.
Hard mode
Turn on hard mode in Settings for a stricter game. Every green letter has to stay in the same spot, and every yellow letter has to appear somewhere in your next guesses. You can only switch it on or off before your first guess of a round.
Tips
- Start with a word that uses common letters and several vowels, like CRANE or SLATE.
- Use your second guess to test new letters, even if you already have a green or two.
- Watch the keyboard. Grey keys are letters you can stop trying.
- Think about where letters usually sit. E and Y often end words, and S often starts them.
